Discover High Performance Precast

Presenter: Brian Miller, P.E., LEED AP
Managing Director, Business Development, PCI

Recent code changes, increasing sustainability requirements, and a challenging economy are just some of the factors increasing demand for high-performance structures. However, high performance is not business-as-usual. The concept of ‘high-performance’ encompasses sustainability; however, it goes beyond a ‘this-or-that’ approach by requiring optimization of all relevant attributes for a project on a life cycle basis. This presentation will explain what high performance structures are, and how precast concrete can help you achieve your high performance project goals.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Define what high performance structures are
  2. Discuss the advantages and long-term benefits of high performance design
  3. Describe how precast concrete contributes to design versatility, energy efficiency, and long-term building performance
  4. Explain the concept of resiliency and how high performance design incorporates it to provide multi-hazard protection.

Design Unity: The Integration of Structural & Envelope Systems

When: April 16 and 18
Presenter: TBA
Level: 2 - Intermediate

Description: The integration of structural and envelope systems is a primary concern in building design. Dissimilar materials, load paths, multiple contractors, attachment of the skin, and the list of challenges goes on. Since precast concrete is both a structural and an architectural material, it can be used to combine both of these systems into one, often called a total precast system. This can result in saving materials and time, as well as reducing the number of trades involved and associated risk. It also helps increase the useable floor space, design versatility, adaptive reuse options and long-term durability. This presentation will provide an overview of total precast systems, and explain design options from shear-wall concepts to moment-frame structures. It will also address issues that designers should consider when working with these systems such as planning, design concepts, connections, and utility integration.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Explain what total precast systems are and the advantages they provide for high performance structures.
  2. Describe design approaches for precast concrete structural systems and the pros and cons of each.
  3. Describe integration options with utility, elevators, and technology systems.
  4. Discuss panelization and fenestration design
