Functional Resilience – A Critical Component of Sustainability

Presenter:
Dean Frank, P.E., LEED Green Assoc.

Sustainability has had a profound effect on most of us. It has made us think differently about how we live and function as a society.  Of course, it has also changed how we design and build structures. Initially, most of the focus was on the construction of a structure, occupant comfort and energy efficiency.  Energy efficiency is a critical component of sustainable design, especially since recent studies show that most of a building’s environmental impact comes from its energy use over the life of the structure.  However, there is another critical component that should not be overlooked – functional resilience.  How do we ensure that the life of a sustainable structure is maximized?  Unfortunately, every year there are natural disasters, storms, and even manmade threats that destroy parts of our built environment wasting valuable resources, energy, money and time, and adding to our landfills.  When these events happen, they can undo all of our good intentions and efforts and of course, threaten human life.

This presentation explains the concept of functional resilience and presents ideas that we can incorporate into designing and building structures to ensure they last as long as we intend them to. Join us and learn more about this critical component of sustainability.
